Special Events in Year 2
Spring 1

Religious Education:
This week we had a visit from our local vicar Ben Morgan Lundie to talk to the children about our Religious Education topic which has been all about the good news that Jesus brings. We were able to share what we had already been learning about and we asked lots of questions. The children could recall the story of Matthew and were able to remember why he was chosen by Jesus to be one of the disciples. Ben then told us another story about some of the other disciples. After half term we will be finding out all about the Easter story and how this is celebrated in Church.

Farm and Country Visit:
The children all enjoyed our visit all about where our foods come from. This linked to our science topic this term which has covered food chains. So many of the foods we eat come from local farms but we were also surprised to learn that many foods are grown and then transported across the world.

Aquarium Visit
Climate Hero Assembly
Tuesday 28th January

Today we had a visit from the Marine Aquarium and they talked to the children about how we can all make such an incredible difference with Climate Change. We have learnt many ways that we can be Climate Heroes:

  • Turning off the tap and not wasting water.
  • Recycling and reusing clothes and toys.
  • Walking more and not using our cars.
  • Turning off the lights and saving electricity.
  • Eating less meat.
It was a fantastic assembly and we learnt a lot about the importance of taking care of our planet.

Happy New Year
January 2025

We are excited to welcome are children back after the Christmas break and looking forward to a spring term full of new learning experiences. This week we have started our English Learning Journey and the story which we are focusing on is the Jungle Book. The children enjoyed watching the film as a launch for this and have been confidently recalling the main events when sequencing the story.

In science we have started finding out about microhabitats and we explored a wide variety of these in our forest school afternoon. We are lucky to have such an amazing outdoor environment at Looe. The children even created their own microhabitats in their forest school session and decided how they would find food and water.

In Morning Maths we have introduced the new KIRF's for this term. Take a look at the attached documents to see how you can help your children practice these instant recall facts at home. We have also been finding out about 2D and 3D shapes, counting the sides and vertices and learning their names.

Our music sessions with Sally Butlin involved using percussion instruments to create simple rhythms, the children learnt to take turns and to follow instructions. We look forward to see how these skills evolve in the coming weeks.

Welcome to Year 2
What will we be learning in the Wider Curriculum this term?

We are very excited to welcome the children back to school this week. It will be a very fabulous half term and we are all particularly looking forward to celebrating the 40th Birthday of Looe Primary Academy on the 4th October. This week we will start sharing information about the learning that will be happening in Year 2 during the Autumn Term. Our topic this term is: 'What was it like to live in Victorian Times?'

For the first time this year we are able to share with you the curriculum map that we use to plan the wider curriculum content and learning for each half term. The wider curriculum is all subjects except English and maths. We use the National Curriculum for our teaching decisions and this is based on the knowledge that we want children to gain. We hope that you find these maps helpful and when we start a new one, we will send it to you. It would be great if you could talk to your child about what they are learning from time to time and now you know what they are learning. There is a question that guides the work and we make sure that they get a good share of all subjects over the year, so some boxes may have less in them for one term or half term than other subjects.

In maths we are also introducing some new language in maths called 'KIRFS'. This stands for Key Instant Recall Facts. These are being introduced to the children and Mrs Davies, our maths lead will email a letter home by the end of the week to explain a little more and to suggest how you can help at home. You will receive a class blog at least once per week now, so please help us by updating your permissions on Arbor so that we can blog pictures of your child and share their learning with you more. If you have any questions about the curriculum map, please let me know and I will help as much as possible.

Christmas Craft Afternoon

On Wednesday 4th December the children in Year 2 had a wonderful time making Christmas Baubles with their families.

Artist Sue Bennett came into work with us and helped the children to create their own baubles designs.

It was lovely to be able to have so many parents join us for Christmas Crafts.

Morwellham Quay
Tuesday 26th November

Today we had a fantastic trip to Morwellham Quay so that we could travel back in time and experience life as a Victorian person. We were able to visit the Victorian Classroom, travel on the mine train and also have a go at dressing up in Victorian costumes.

When we went underground on the mine train, the children could feel the rainwater dripping from the ceiling of the mine. When we went into the Victorian Classroom and the teacher was very strict. Some of the children had to volunteer to try out some of the punishments. Luckily, the teacher was just acting, and these weren't real. We were told that if the children were fidgeting with their hair, then they might have to wear the finger blocks. When children were not focused on their learning or if they made a mistake, they would have to stand in the corner of the room and wear the dunces cap. If you could not sit up straight and were seen to be slouching, then you would have to stand with the back board behind you and it was very uncomfortable.

The children enjoyed dressing up in Victorian costumes and were able to see what they would have worn if they were rich or poor. The costumes were amazing, and it definitely helped the experience feel more realistic.

Computing
Friday 22nd November

We have had a wonderful time in class this week exploring the use of technology to present our work. The children in Year 6 have helped us to use Microsoft Word to write about Florence Nightingale. The children wrote facts about her and were taught how to download and save images from the internet.

Music and Gymnastics
Friday 22nd November

We have continued to enjoy our music sessions with Sally Butlin. The children are learning the notes on a Ukulele and then they are starting to play simple tunes. It is lovely to hear how confidently they are participating and we look forward to them being able to share some of their Ukulele skills with the whole school before the end of term.

In PE this half term we are doing Gymnastics, we have been exploring how to travel around the hall safely and learning about the variety of ways to jump off the equipment. This week we were able to use the wall bars and the children were very brave.
