Foundation   Welcome Back!

Welcome back!

We came back to school after our Easter break to some very windy weather, so we used our wind ribbons to build on our gross and fine muscle development. We had great fun swirling and waving them around our outside learning area!

Our new topic for this half term is "What is above the clouds?" our children have come up with some great responses such as "astronauts" "space" "the moon" and "rockets". One of our older children even came up with " Mercury"!
Some of our activities this week have been making junk model aliens, split pin astronauts, and we have used geometric shapes to build space rocket pictures. The children have been very creative with their designs. Art and craft activities help children to develop their fine motor and hand to eye coordination skills, this gives them the skills needed to manipulate tools such as scissors and pencils, and leads to early writing skills.

Welcome back!

Welcome back to our Summer term, let's hope the weather improves as we begin rounders and athletics PE on Wednesday and Fridays - don't forget the children are able to wear their PE kits on these days  - on the field if the weather is fine. This term our big question is 'What do we need to be an Olympian?' with a focus on the Ancient Greeks, our circulatory system, healthy eating and some great art and DT planned we are excited to teach the children some key myths and legends and investigate the Greek Gods and Goddesses.

Our new term kicked off with a wonderful event on Friday 19th April with our alternative sports day and it was lovely to see so many of you going out of your comfort zone in street surfing and Segway. I managed to catch a few photos of some of you and it was wonderful to see how supportive you were of each other.

Week 1 - Summer Term

What a fantastic first week back we have had! The children have come back to school with such enthusiasm, and it has been lovely to see! We have loved hearing all about their Easter activities at home too!

This week the children have worked so well. All children have been exploring a Kenning poem and have been exploring verbs ending -ing to make a noun verb phrase such as children eating, cars tooting. The children then imitated our Kenning poem into a poem about Looe and we were blown away with the suggestions the children came up with! The children have then been using their phonic knowledge to write the poem. They are amazing.

In maths the year ones have been exploring number bonds to 10 and have been working hard to add objects together to make 10, using part-whole models. The year one children have been exploring length and height, they have used key vocabulary and have measured objects using cubes and then learning about a ruler and measuring in centimetres.

Today we held our Alternative sports afternoon, and it was fantastic, the children had lots of fun joining in with all the activities and games. We will try and fit lots of these activities into our special sports in foundation/ year 1 over the last summer term.

The children have achieved so much this week and have explored so much learning.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend

Foundation /year 1 team.

Foundation   Welcome to Looe Nursery

Welcome to Looe Nursery!

Looe Primary welcomes children from 2 years of age into our nursery setting.

Our staff have a wealth of experience and knowledge and work hard to create a safe and nurturing environment for the children in our care. We also recognise that parents are children’s most important teachers and therefore work closely with them.

Play is essential for children’s development, building their confidence as they learn to explore, relate to others, set their own goals, and solve problems. Children learn by leading their own play, and by taking part in play and learning that is guided by adults. We put early language at the heart of a broad curriculum, and spend time on quality interactions with children.
We offer funded and non funded sessions for 2, 3, and 4 year olds. Government funding is available for children from the first term after their 2nd or third birthday and information about  this can be obtained from The Family Information Service. The following link explains how you can apply for help with childcare costs: https://www.childcarechoices.gov.uk

The nursery have very close links with the Reception Class and have a comprehensive and effective transition every Summer term for those starting school in September. Our staff work closely with the school's EYFS Lead who regularly visits.
We can offer hot meals, which in some circumstances can be free for some children. We provide a fruit snack and milk mid morning where children sit down together.

Please do contact the office for a visit if you wish to find out more.

Microbits and Coding

This week, we have started to learn how to use coding to control our resident set of BBC Microbits. These are small programmable devices that can be made to show light sequences, sounds and responses to inputs.

We used block code to provide a set of instructions for the Microbits to follow. Next week, we will be looking at developing our understanding of Microbits to develop our own projects.

The start of the Summer Term

It has been lovely to welcome the children back and hear what they've been up to in the holidays. It sounds like they have all had a lovely time off.

We have a really exciting summer term planned with lots to look forward to.

We have started our science topic this week which is 'our bodies.' We have been learning about our eyes and how they help us to see. We did an investigation where we turned off and on the lights and saw what happened to our pupils. We then also acted as scientists and collected data. We made a tally chart of the eye colours in the class and discussed which was the most common. We loved collecting data and sharing our findings as a class!

Our big question for this term is 'where do we live?' and I am looking forward to our Geography lessons where we will explore this question further.

Just a reminder that our P.E days have stayed the same this half term and so children can wear their P.E kits in on a Monday and a Friday.

The children have come back to school brilliantly and as always, I am always so impressed with their attitude to learning and look forward to our term together.

The year 1 team.

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to this final term of the year.
Some things to be mindful of in the coming weeks.

PE - This is now on Thursdays with the coach. Children to come into school in school PE kit.

This Thursday (18th April). We look forward to welcoming you into school for 2 reasons. Firstly, Year 3,4 and 5 have prepared a celebration of their work all about Ancient Egyptians and would love to welcome you into the school hall at 2.30, later into their classrooms. Secondly, Thursday after school in the hall sees the residential meeting for Year 4 parents. Parents to please make their way straight after school. The meeting will begin at 3.30pm.

Please do check your emails for information for the next couple of weeks. There's lots going on for children and families. We warmly welcome you into school.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Clubs will be starting back in the second week, please do email the class teacher to try to guarantee a spot on your favourites!

Finally.  Please can you continue to support your children with their times tables.  If you would like another timetable sheet, please do get in touch.  A helpful website is www.timestables.co.uk and the ones I showed you at our Parent Teacher Meeting.

Many Thanks

Miss Pittas and Mrs Langan

Easter Celebrations

The children had a brilliant time creating some 'eggcellent' egg creations to enter into the whole school easter competition. Here are some of the entries from Year 3, there were some wonderful ideas. We even had many entries that followed on from our Ancient Egypt topic.

Computing - Scratch

We have really enjoyed using Scratch, we have had to think creatively, reason systematically and work collaboratively. It has been good to explore the programme with our peers and everyone has grown in confidence and learnt something new.

Dear All!

We have come to the end of a very busy term!  The children have had a broad range of learning and opportunities this term and I can safely say that we are all tired and ready for the break!

The children have covered money, multiplication and some aspects of measure in maths this term.  Next term will focus on finishing all of the curriculum and then will be revisiting and practising methods and strategies in preparation for their SATs in May.

In English, the children have written a very important letter to the Prime Minister to persuade him to do more regarding climate change in this country.  Alongside this, they have covered many different habitats and how it all relates to one another!  Not to mention our trip to the Aquarium which was excellent and the children thoroughly enjoyed it!

We made moon buggies too!  The children loved learning about all of the different explorers past and present and particularly enjoyed the moon landings!

We have also had many other exciting things like our celebration on St Pirans day and also TT Rockstars and World Book days where the children had opportunities to dress up (and adults too!).

We have many more lovely things planned for Summer Term!

Enjoy your Easter everyone!

Mrs Brewer, Miss Ryan and Miss B

Celebrating St Piran's Day

We had fun finding out about the jolliest of the patron saints: St Piran. We researched the story and then used the main points to create comics to retell his journey from Ireland to Cornwall.

We also looked at the culture and heritage of Cornwall and challenged ourselves with quiz questions in teams (plus parents) about our special county.

Art Project- Sneak Peek!

Year 6 had the opportunity to work with two local artists to contribute towards a collective project involving paint, collage and sketching. The theme of the project is identity and our understanding of ourselves. The creativity shown by the children throughout the sessions was superb and it was great to see their unique approaches to the brief. We will shared the finished results in due course but hopefully it will make for a fantastic piece of collaborative art.

Well done Year 6!

Happy Easter!

We have had a lovely week in the lead up to the holidays. The children have worked extremely hard to get the last of their learning for our topic finished before we move onto our next big question for the summer term! Our question for next term will be ‘Where do we live?’ and I am excited to explore this with the children.

We have also had our annual Easter egg competition at Looe this week. The children had some fabulous entries and I can see they worked so hard. They look fantastic.

We also had an exciting visit from the Easter bunny this morning. We designed our own eggs and sat on them yesterday and today we came in and they have hatched into chocolate eggs! We were all very excited. I hope you all have a lovely Easter break, whatever you get up to. I will see you all after the Easter holidays.

Miss Bolger

Head's Blog   Cross Country expert

This Year 5 pupil has a great deal to be smiling about!  He is a cross country addict and his determination to run well and to improve his times, run after run, resulted in a 3rd place at the final of the Cornwall Games Cross Country event in Newquay last week.  This was the end of a season of races that saw a number of Looe Primary children run amongst hundreds of children on a regular basis at various venues across the locality, including Landrake and Liskeard.  Some of the times and places achieved, often in very muddy conditions have been wonderful.  The weather has  been atrocious for many of the races, but the enthusiasm and the determination that all of the children showed was amazing.  This pupil qualified for the final along with another of his Year 5 peers.  They are great running partners and regularly place very close to each other in the events.  Congratulations to both boys, as although the other child did not place, he was very close behind and is as proud of his achievements as his friend.  Well done boys and we are looking forward to next season very much.

SATs Practice and Cracking Eggs

Year 6 have worked amazingly hard this week completing their last practice SATs tests before the main event in May. They have shown really positive attitudes and their progress from the previous tests has been superb. Well done all of Year 6!

We have also had some amazing entries for the Easter Egg competition with some very clever and funny themes.

Well done to all who entered and we look forward to hearing who our winners are in a special assembly on the last day of term.

Wishing you all a lovely Easter break!
